The map shows settlements in Mongolia where Russian Old-Time settlers lived (as established from interviews and other sources) and/or still live.

If the settlement no longer exists, an asterisk is placed after its name. The geolocation of such settlements is established based on maps from 1935/1939 (map of Red Army), 1942 (State Map of the USSR. Transbaikalia, Mongolia, China) and 1946 (Map of the USSR).

The names of some settlements on the maps had different transcriptions. Different spellings are labeled with a slash – /.

Russians also lived in settlements near gold mines that existed in the first third of the 20th century. Some of these mines were marked on the maps from the 1930s and 1940s.

Our map also shows some Russian cemeteries in Mongolia. You can follow the link to view photographs taken by V.L. Klyaus in 2023-2025, as well as content from social media.

Unfortunately, it has not been possible to establish the geolocation of all the settlements where Russians lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The names of the settlements are known from interviews and other sources – Galantai, Gul’nur, Dul’gont, Bolgatai, Zelter/Zyltyr, Sudutui, Tszaim-Shabi/Zamen-Shabi…

This list is not complete. We would appreciate any additional details or suggestions, which can be sent to us by email: rus-mongol.imli@inbox.ru
